COMMUMNITY VACCINATION PROGRAM COULD BE AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHER TOWNS TO FOLLOW

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole has thrown his support behind a community-driven plan to vaccinate the residents of Portland, Wallerawang, Lidsdale and Cullen Bullen against COVID-19.

Community groups from the towns have joined forces to encourage residents to get vaccinated in what they describe as an initiative “to protect our community”.

Flyers are being letter box dropped to residents encouraging them to support the whole of community vaccine roll out by filling in the forms and returning them to either Portland or Wallerawang Post Office or Doctor Haran and Associates in Wallerawang.

The residents would then be contacted and an appointment made to attend Dr Haran’s practice for the jab.

Mr Toole said he applauds the initiative which involves community groups including: Wallerawang Community and Sports Club, Wallerawang/Lidsdale Progress Association, Wallerawang Memorial Men’s Shed, Wallerawang/Lidsdale CWA, The Friends of St Johns, Portland Men’s Shed, Portland Touch Football Association, Portland and District Swimming Pool and Portland Business Association.

“This is an example of our communities banding together to step up the fight against COVID-19,” he said.

“The path to returning back to some sort of normality in our lives is by getting vaccinated.

“What these community groups are doing could be something that other smaller communities right across the state could consider.”

According to the flyers the first priority are those residents over 60 years to receive the Astra Zenica vaccine and Pfizer for the 40-59 years age group, then 18-40 year olds, followed by children.
